Adolescents’ perceptions of parenting andfamily relationships are important variables for identifyingmechanisms involved in how children acquire values andhow these values are transmitted through families. In asample of 515 adolescents, we investigated whether perceptionsof the quality of parental practices would predictadolescents’ collectivist and individualist values. Wehypothesized that perceived quality of family relationswould mediate the relationship between the quality ofparental practices and collectivist values but not of individualistvalues. The results of structural equation modelingsuggested that perception of the quality of parentalpractices predicted adolescents’ both collectivist and individualistvalues. The predicted mediation effect was foundfor collectivist values, but not for individualist values. Theresults point to different functions of parenting and familyrelations on value acquisition. Implications for practice, such as the development and implementation of interventionsto improve the formation of adolescents’ values byenhancing the quality of parenting and family relationshipsare discussed.
